How to choose your wedding DJ: the questions to ask

Updated 3 October 2026

A DJ meets an engaged couple around a table to plan the music for their wedding

The DJ is one of the suppliers who weighs most on how your wedding will be remembered, and one of the hardest to judge from photos. Here are the questions to ask before you sign, and the signs that should worry you.

1. Listen before you choose

  • Ask for clips from real sets, ideally recorded at weddings, not just club mixes.
  • Check that their repertoire covers every generation among your guests.
  • Ask how they handle your must-plays and your do-not-plays.

Also look at the supplier's past events, in photos and in detail. Ours, for example: a 200-guest wedding in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.

2. Meet the person

A conversation, by video call or over a coffee, tells you more than any review. You're trusting them with your evening: they should ask questions about you, your guests and your schedule, not just recite a package. Also make sure they're the one who will actually play on the day.

3. Know exactly what's included

  • The equipment: a sound system sized for your venue, a mic for the speeches, dancefloor lighting.
  • The set-up: who delivers, installs, adjusts and packs down, and at what time.
  • The duration: from what time to what time, and the rate if the party runs late.
  • The extra moments: ceremony, cocktail hour, several spaces.

4. Talk about the venue

A technician sets up a speaker in a reception barn before a wedding
  • Does the DJ know the venue, or are they planning a site visit?
  • Is there a sound limiter or a set finishing time? A good DJ adapts to it without killing the atmosphere.
  • Are the access and the power supply compatible with their set-up?

Outdoors, the questions multiply: see outdoor weddings: what the music needs to plan for.

5. Secure the big day

  • What is the plan B if the equipment fails?
  • Who replaces them if something serious prevents them from coming?
  • How do they coordinate with the caterer, the wedding planner and the venue?
  • Does the contract specify the deposit, the cancellation terms and professional liability insurance?

Warning signs

  • No clips to listen to, or only heavily edited videos.
  • A vague quote, with no times and no detailed equipment list.
  • No questions about you, your guests or your venue.
  • A price far below the market rate, with no explanation.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should we book our wedding DJ?

Ideally 8 to 12 months ahead, especially for a Saturday in peak season (May to September). Last-minute requests are still possible, depending on availability.

Should we meet our DJ before the wedding?

Yes, at least by video call. It's the best way to check that they understand your style and your guests, and to agree on the running order of the evening together.

Does the DJ handle the mic for the speeches?

Yes, that's their job: they set up the mic, manage the music around the speeches and lift the atmosphere again afterwards.
